Question:

Are there any supplements available to help with arthritis?

Hi Dr. Wylde,
I have arthritis in my knees and it is progressively getting worse. I have seen my GP and my orthopedic doctor. Physical therapy has been recommended which I will be starting soon. But, I was wondering if there is any supplement/vitamin that I can take to help protect my knees from getting worse. I have a 1.5 year old grandson who I adore and would like to keep up with him as I get older. Please help! Thank you so much for your time and I love your segment on CP24!

Natural Eggshell Membrane or N.E.M has been shown to be very effective for reducing joint pain associated with osteoarthritis (degenerative joint disease). N.E.M contains Glucosamine and Chondroitin sulphate, Fucose, Dermatan Sulphate and Type 1 collagen. Clinical research found that this combination was far more effective than glucosamine alone. Participants experienced significant improvement in pain in only 7 days. N.E.M works to rebuild the cartilage in the joint. Avo Vida has also proven to be beneficial as it helps to increase joint space and reduce the pain associated with cartilage breakdown. Bromelain is also useful as it serves to reduce inflammation.

Studies have shown that products containing the combination of the following ingredients provide pain relief in mild to moderate joint pain: glucosamine sulphate, chondroitin sulphate, and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). According to the studies it takes at least 4 to 8 weeks to obtain beneficial effects. Knees are considered one of the toughest to treat because of the body’s weight on the joint. Well-designed exercises can help strengthen the muscles and tendons. Reducing body weight is also important to reduce the weight on the joint which will reduce the friction in the joint.
Supplements containing anti-inflammatory herbs such as Devil’s claw (harpagophytum procumbens), Boswellia serrata, or Curcuma longa can provide rapid pain relief prior to obtaining the benefits of the above chondroprotective products. There are supplements that contain an anti-inflammatory herb as well as the above chondroprotective ingredients. These will provide relief beginning during the first week of use and 4 to 8 weeks later the full benefit of an anti-inflammatory plus chondroprotective supplement will be obtained.
