I am taking Crestor, what supplement should I be taking?
I saw the tail end of an interview with you on Can. AM regarding taking a supplement with CRESTOR. I have had atrial fibrilation for the past 8 years; I'm on many meds including Crestor and you said people taking Crestor should be taking a supplement for their muscles. What was the supplement and is it safe for me.
Answer:
It is usually suggested that people supplement with Coenzyme Q10 when taking statin drugs. It is important to remember that first line treatment for elevated cholesterol is diet and lifestyle. Make sure you eat a low glycemic index diet which has been shown to reduce cholesterol by 50% or more in less than 6 weeks.
Statins such as Crestor list in the contraindications that they "may cause muscle cramping or weakness". This is a very big contraindication when one consider the heart is a muscle. It is a good idea to speak to your or a second opinion physician about this concern whether or not statins are in fact beneficial in your particular case. You should take the opportunity when speaking with your physician and ask for direction about commencing an exercise program that includes weight or resistance training. Including protein in each of your meals is an important nutrient for preserving muscle tissue and will potentially improve lean body mass, heart health and many other benefits when combined with a comprehensive exercise plan. Supplementing with a high quality protein powder is an simple and cost effective solution to insuring adequate protein delivery.
