Question:

Is it safe to use herbal teas for weight loss when I am taking thyroid and diabetes medication?

I just read an article about your appearance on Dr. Oz and the article talks about drinking various teas to lose fat and weight. Is it safe to drink these teas (pu-erh, white, dandelion, chickweed, bilberry or cinnamon) if I am currently taking a Thyroid pill, and two diabetes pills, Metformin & Diamicron or Gligazide..... My goal for this year is to lose more weight and to get off of or reduce the diabetes medications. Thanks, Elaine

Dear Elaine,
Your situation is more complicated than it sounds. If you are taking Thyroid and diabetes medication, you likely have adrenal dysfunction (adrenal glands help manage stress, and produce some of the precursors to other hormones in the body). In your case, an holistic practitioner (e.g. Naturopathic Doctor) should review your labwork and discuss whether your current hormonal state is properly balanced, and direct you with minor changes and dietary recommendations to assist you. From these recommendations, you should find it easier to reduce your weight. You should also be tested for yeast overgrowth (candidiasis) and possible heavy metal burden - both of these health factors will reduce your metabolism and make it harder to lose weight.
Good luck on your goals!
